Calabasas Firewise Communities May 2026

Calabasas Firewise Communities Are Growing

Firewise was developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and is a cooperative effort among local, state, federal, and private agencies and organizations to promote fire safety in the wildland/urban interface.

The Firewise USA program, run by the NFPA and reviewed by CAL FIRE, helps communities enhance fire safety in wildfire-prone areas. This decade-long program is science-based and has proven effective in preventing structural loss during wildfires.

Calabasas Firewise helps communities, each step of the way, become and maintain their Firewise status.

Calabasas currently has 16 Firewise Communities with one in formation.

Benefits of being a Firewise Community

The primary reason for becoming a Firewise Community in Calabasas should be to save lives and property.

However, in October 2022, Commissioner Ricardo Lara of the California Department of Insurance (CDI) signed into law a regulation requiring insurers to reflect and take into account specified mitigation factors in their rating plans. Insurance companies are required to give discounts to Firewise Communities. CDI provides many resources and information regarding this regulation.

Technology today is allowing insurance companies to better assess their risks.

We have to step up to the plate and do our part.

Today, there is a shift to “risk prevention” for both homeowners and insurance companies.
